I don’t know about you, but the main reason I find cupcakes so appealing is the beautiful decorating. Have you ever stepped into a cupcake shop and taken a look of all the differently piped cakes? They are truly a work of art and let me tell you, you don’t need to be an artist to master piping cupcakes. It’s the most common question we get, so we are going to give you a step by step cupcake decorating tutorial.
Decorating Bags: Decorating bags securely hold the icing and decorating tip when you pipe your icing. The most common types of decorating bags are Featherweight, Disposable and Parchment. Bags also come in many sizes. The size of bag you need most often just depends on the amount of frosting you will be doing. We prefer Wilton’s Plastic (disposable) Decorating Bags.
Decorating Tips: Decorating tips are small metal cones which are inserted in the decorating bags in order to create beautiful piping. We love Wilton’s Decorating Bag Tips. Our most commonly used decorating tip is the 1M Swirl.
Frosting: When it comes to frosting you can choose whichever flavor you desire so long as it has the consistency to maintain its shape. Our favorite is our classic butter cream.
Step 1: Cut a small slit at the bottom of your plastic decorating bad and place your decorating tip so it sits comfortably at the bottom. Fill your decorating bag with your icing leaving at least a fist’s worth of room up top. (When you put too much icing in your decorating bag it tends to over flow creating a hard to grip, messy situation.
Step 2: Twist the top of your decorating bag to ensure all your frosting is at the bottom, and squeeze slowly until it beings to emerge from the tip. Slowly drag the tip around the circumference of the cupcake working your way up and in towards to center. When in the middle, release the pressure and pull upwards.
That’s it! Easy, right? This basic technique can be used with any size decorating tip to create the professional looking cupcake designs once only found in cupcake shops. Play around with shapes, colors, toppers, and more. The possibilities are endless!
